Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. As a young girl her father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother without a choice other than to become a cleaner girl and waitress to provide for the family. Ruth attended the school in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. However, she was only in the school for two years, before going on to pursue an acting profession. Her path to success turned out be filled with challenges and In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills in a magazine for crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. As a hat check woman in a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. It was there that she made a buck working as an usherette during the day, and at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. Drama studies led her to receive a degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
